By offering more than 400 spectral bands of data, Tanager-1 is set to expand the capabilities of Planet Labs and enable the discovery of occurrences that are invisible to the unaided eye. This satellite, a product of the Carbon Mapper Coalition—a philanthropic initiative aimed at creating advanced hyperspectral satellites—will focus on identifying and monitoring methane and CO2 super-emitters, thereby supporting direct mitigation efforts.

Tanager-1, which combines the cutting-edge imaging spectrometer created by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory with the sophisticated aeronautical technology of Planet Labs, is a major advancement in satellite technology. Additionally, Planet Labs’ clients will have access to the hyperspectral data from Tanager-1 for a range of uses, such as water quality tests, mineral mapping, biodiversity assessments, and military and intelligence surveillance.

Advancements in Urban Planning and Monitoring

In a separate development, Planet Labs recently announced that its SkySat data has been utilized by the government of Bahrain, specifically by the Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB), to advance urban planning efforts nationwide. The SLRB has collaborated with Aetosky (formerly SkyMap Global) to deploy an advanced urban planning system that integrates AI-powered change detection with high-resolution satellite imagery from Planet Labs.

This system provides the SLRB with regular biweekly updates, enhancing their ability to monitor infrastructure changes, environmental developments, and urban greenspaces. By leveraging Planet Labs’ proprietary data cube technology, the new system enables efficient tracking of spatial-temporal changes, streamlining the analysis process, and optimizing resource allocation across Bahrain.
