The company declared on Monday, that it will expand its Shops feature, which launched one year ago on the Facebook app. The feature is currently being tested on WhatsApp and the Facebook Marketplace in the US, allowing US merchants to sell their products on a global platform that has more than 1 billion monthly users.

Over the last year, Facebook says Shops’ audience has grown to over 300 million monthly visitors and about 1.2 million active sellers.

“One in three shoppers worldwide predicts a reduction in time spent in offline stores after the pandemic has ended,” Facebook reports. Using Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp, consumers get shopping ideas and want to buy them virtually, the company said in a press release.

To fulfill these requests, Facebook is rolling out artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) features to improve the shopping experience for consumers and boost sales. The social media giant is launching a number of new shopping technologies including visual search on Instagram and dynamic augmented reality ads designed to secure the future of shopping.

Key Benefits of AI and AR Technologies

  • Thus, with AI, buyers can select something they like and the application will suggest places where they can buy something similar.
  • Likewise, AR technologies will enable buyers and sellers online to try on clothing or accessories (and cosmetics).
  • A significant benefit that different brands and companies can obtain from Facebook platforms is the ability to personalize and target their ads.
  • In order to deliver a more personalized shopping experience to users, Facebook’s algorithms can analyze data about their activities on its family of apps.

By investing in technologies like augmented reality and artificial intelligence, Facebook is able to help users visualize items before making a purchase and create highly relevant and targeted ads based on their interests and behaviors. The company believes this will soon become the standard for buying behavior.

Facebook shares, which have risen 24.11% YTD and 41.7% in the past year, hit a new 52-week high as of this writing.
