A video emerged on Twitter on Tuesday morning, December 29, showing how the Tesla Model Y car moves at night with laser radar (lidar) mounted on the windshield, which was described by Luminar as a computer. The news brought the share’s price from the previous close of $32.36 to $36.14 in the trading session on December 30.

This wasn’t a sensation in general, since Luminar is one of the leading hardware engineers for autonomous driving systems. Thanks to the alliance with Mobileye, which analysts have previously acknowledged as the opportunity for Luminar in this market.
Luminar Hydra lidars have been checked on the Volvo crossover chassis already. The experience by Tesla last month was the cumbersome configuration of the test platform on the roof.
Lightweight lidar incorporation into the car body is, however, provided for production vehicles. At the same time, at a scanning distance of up to 500 m, the lidar delivers high precision, and the device’s electronics are shielded from water, dust, and vibration.
The presence of a Luminar test platform on the Tesla car was presumably viewed by investors as a chance for the company to get a big client. The biggest maker of modern electric vehicles will shortly deliver an autopilot upgrade, and Tesla’s robot driver will have fully autonomous driving shortly. If Luminar becomes Tesla’s lidar provider, there would be a clear positive momentum for LAZR shares.
It should is although important that Tesla is not testing lidars in its vehicles for the first time. Video cameras with obstacle detection are used in the latest iteration of Tesla’s autopilot. Maybe Tesla contrasts the benefits of various systems, and the company has not publicly revealed intentions to move to lidar so far.
Luminar Technologies Inc (LAZR) was down -5.65% to $30.54 on Friday with a 10.18% decline since the beginning of the year.
